Concentrations and forms of heavy metals in Slovak soils
2005
The risk assessment of heavy-metal contamination in soils requires knowledge of the controls of metal concentrations and speciation. We tested the relationship between soil properties (pH, CEC, Corg, oxide concentrations, texture) and land use (forest, grassland, arable) and the partitioning of Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn among the seven fractions of a sequential extraction procedure in 146 A horizons from Slovakia. Using a cluster analysis, we identified 92 soils as representing background metal concentrations while the remaining 54 soils showed anthropogenic contamination. Among the background soils, forest soils had the lowest heavy-metal concentrations except for Pb (highest)…
Potentially toxic elements in fen peatland soils located near lignite-fired power plants in Central Poland
2021
Abstract The Grojec Valley (GV) peatland area in Central Poland is located close to lignite-fired power plants, which could be sources of potentially toxic elements (PTE). The aims of this study are: (1) to determine the effect of the lignite-fired power plants on soil pollution, (2) to evaluate pollution indices and magnetic susceptibility methods for determining the origin and distribution of PTE in soils, and (3) to demonstrate the importance of appropriate geochemical background (GB) selection for pollution studies in peatland soils. In order to comprehensively assess the soil pollution, four pollution indices (calculated using various types of GBs), and the mass-specific magnetic susce…
State of the Art in Alq3-Based Spintronic Devices
2015
Since the first observation of a magnetoresistance signal in a vertical organic spin valve in 2004, tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq3) molecule has become a standard material for organic spintronics devices. This chapter will briefly present the state of the art on Alq3-based spintronic devices and the different approaches applied through the years to try to optimize these systems. It will be remarked that, despite extensively investigated, many fundamental questions regarding the spin injection and transport mechanisms through the organic layer are still unclear. The chapter will also present some of the most controversial topics in the organic spintronic area and it will highlight…

Crystal Engineering of Multifunctional Molecular Materials
2007
In this paper we will focus on the crystal engineering of molecular materials exhibiting magnetic and/or electrical properties. The complexity of these materials needs of a precise design of the molecular building blocks, a control of the intermolecular interactions (hydrogen bonds, host/guest interactions, etc.) and a mastery in crystallization techni- ques in order to design crystal structures exhibiting useful physical proper- ties. We will illustrate this concept through some relevant examples based on two-component hybrid materials.
